Running along Ocean Boulevard at Atlantic Avenue, the promenade was once a respected and beloved part of the city. It was originally made to allow residents to walk to the beach from the city with little hassle. However, after years of use wore it down, it was clear that updates were needed. After much discussion, plans to create improvements to it are finally underway. One of the features that are eagerly expected is the ergonomic ways that the promenade will assist pedestrians in reaching their location.
The key phrase that was kept in mind when deciding on alterations was ‘pedestrian friendly’. That objective helped with the inception of ideas such as painted pathways. Through this street art, Delray Beach has found its own unique way to help direct traffic at busy intersections. Additions from a previous renovation, such as new benches and cold water fountains, offer relief from walking and the hot sun that comes with life at a beach town. Also from the former renovation, surfboard racks help clear clutter off of the beach, and pet waste stations will allow owners to take care of Fido’s mess.
Humans won’t be the only ones benefitting from improvements to the promenade. Sea turtles can enjoy ‘sea turtle friendly’ lighting, which consists of lamps that are shielded on the side facing the beach. These lights even regulate themselves with timers during turtle nesting season, so that the ones near restaurants will turn off around midnight, and the ones around less populated areas will turn off earlier in the evening. This allows for sea turtles to hatch in the evening and not be distracted by man-made lighting. The incorporation of solar powered lighting also does service for the environment by using a renewable source of energy. These forms of illumination allow for residents to enjoy the promenade at nighttime while granting turtles the environment to thrive.
The second part of this beachside improvement project is scheduled to start next month and is expected to be implemented by the end of the year. These renovations come at the perfect time: some features on the old promenade were twenty years old. Through these restorations, the promenade becomes a mix of old and new, just like the city that it calls home. Delray Beach is where you’ll find historic buildings that lie next to modern restaurants and shops, oceanfront promenades that incorporate the best of older and newer ideas, and artifacts lying right by new oceanfront residences.
